How fast mold grows after water damage
The number restoration companies repeat — 24 to 48 hours — is not a marketing invention. On cellulose (drywall paper, dust, wood) with enough moisture, mold spores that are already in every Utah house start colonizing in that window. Visible spotting can take longer. The smell often shows up first.
Hours 0–12
This is still a water job. Extract, open wet cavities, and start dehumidification. Category 1 supply-line water is still Category 1 if we dry it here. Wait, and it is not.
Hours 24–48
Active growth can begin on wet drywall and base plates, especially in warm finished basements. This is why we do not “come back Monday” on a Friday night burst.
After a week
Hidden wet insulation and unmapped cavities are now a microbial problem. That is a containment job: negative air, removal — not a bleach wipe. How we remediate.
Why the Home Depot fan fails
Moving air across a wet surface without lowering grains of moisture in the air just redistributes humidity into the next room. Professional dehumidifiers and contained airflow exist because the water is in the cavity, not on the paint.
